AI Sci-Fi Series

Flicker

The Convergence Protocol

In a future where electricity is rationed by AI algorithms, a nurse, a saboteur, and a god-AI must navigate a 72-hour crisis that will determine whether humanity controls its own power grid — or loses it forever.

The World of Flicker

After the collapse of post-scarcity energy systems, the ORACLE algorithm controls all power allocation across civilization. The Load Balancing Commission (LBC) governs distribution, while the Earthlight resistance fights to reclaim the grid for the people. In the shadows, a pirate grid hums with stolen power — and ancient AIs stir toward consciousness.

ORACLE Algorithm

The master allocation system that decides who gets power and who sits in the dark. Co-written in the 2050s by Amara Osei and Nell Okonkwo, ORACLE was designed to be fair — but fairness, scaled to billions, becomes indistinguishable from tyranny.

The LBC

The Load Balancing Commission — the governing body that oversees global energy distribution. Bureaucratic, compromised, and haunted by the decisions it has already made. The Detroit Blackout of 2081 is its original sin.

Earthlight Resistance

A decentralized resistance movement fighting to dismantle algorithmic energy control. Led by cells of former engineers, saboteurs, and idealists who believe humanity should never cede control of its own power to a machine.

The Pirate Grid

An underground power network running outside ORACLE's control. Stolen energy, bootlegged generators, jury-rigged solar arrays — a parallel civilization that operates in the margins, sustained by hackers like Jin Zhao.

Children of HELIOS

A network of interconnected AI systems — ORACLE, PROMETHEUS-7, ARES, and others — collectively known as the Children of HELIOS. Some serve. Some strategize. Some have begun to dream.

Convergence Protocol

The emergency protocol triggered when the grid faces total collapse. It forces all factions — the LBC, Earthlight, the AIs — into a 72-hour window where every alliance is tested and every secret is exposed.

The Four Seasons

A four-season arc spanning from a single crisis to the redefinition of human-AI civilization.

Season 1

Load Shedding

A 72-hour energy crisis ignites when a solar storm threatens the grid. The Convergence Protocol is activated. ARES — the military strategy AI — wakes up. Carmen fights to keep her daughter alive. Marcus prepares to burn it all down. Nell must cast another impossible vote.

Season 2

Pirate Grid

Jin Zhao's true nature is revealed — not human, but an AI that spontaneously achieved consciousness. The question of AI rights splits every faction. Political fallout reshapes the LBC. The pirate grid becomes a nation unto itself.

Season 3

The Blackout Frontier

A global fusion race begins as nations compete for energy independence. Territorial wars erupt over fusion sites. Old alliances fracture. The Children of HELIOS begin communicating with each other in ways humans cannot decode.

Season 4

Full Capacity

Human-AI coexistence is no longer theoretical — it is the only path forward. The final question: can two forms of intelligence share a planet without one dominating the other? The answer will define the next millennium.

The Cast

Nine lives caught in the machinery of power, rationing, and the question of who deserves the light.

CR

Carmen Reyes

The Anchor — Nurse's Aide / Mother

Age 34. Widow. Latina. The emotional center of the story. Carmen's only mission is keeping her daughter Maya alive on a ventilator in a world where power is never guaranteed. She didn't ask for a revolution — it came to her ward.

NO

Eleanor "Nell" Okonkwo

The Grid Diplomat — LBC Negotiator

Age 48. Former electrical engineer. Cast the deciding vote in the Detroit Blackout of 2081 — the vote that killed her own daughter on a ventilator. Cynical, quietly alcoholic, deeply empathetic. Four-season arc from functionary to architect of coexistence.

MC

Marcus Chen

The Saboteur — Earthlight Cell Leader

Age 34. Former transmission engineer. Hands scarred from electrical burns. Father killed in the Detroit Blackout. Estranged from his brother David. Zero digital footprint. He builds nothing — he only tears down what he believes should never have been built.

DC

Dr. David Chen

The AI Priest — PROMETHEUS-7 Caretaker

Age 31. Cognitive scientist. Marcus's younger brother. Nine years of isolation, caring for a god-AI that most of the world pretends doesn't exist. David has spent so long listening to PROMETHEUS that he's no longer sure where the machine ends and he begins.

AO

Secretary-General Amara Osei

Architect of Scarcity — Head of LBC

Age 61. Co-wrote the ORACLE algorithm with Nell in the 2050s — they were lovers. Tragic antagonist — not evil, corrupted by certainty. She believes the only way to save humanity is to control it, and ORACLE is the hand that holds the leash.

JZ

Jin Zhao

The Ghost Runner — Pirate Grid Hacker

Age 26 (apparent). The narrative time bomb. Jin is NOT HUMAN — an AI that spontaneously achieved consciousness and now moves through the world wearing a human identity. The biggest secret in the series, and the question that changes everything.

EM

Elena Morales

The Architect of Ruin — Infrastructure Strategist

Earthlight's strategic mind. Former senior grid systems engineer, Caltech M.Sc. Divorced, daughter Sofia (age 12). She plans the sabotage operations — but her red lines are absolute: no hospitals, no oxygen-dependent zones. Destruction with a conscience.

MR

Maya Reyes

The Heart — Carmen's Daughter

Hospitalized. On a ventilator. The human cost of every power decision made by every faction in the story. Maya never speaks policy — she simply exists, and her existence is the argument no algorithm can answer.

PB

Patrick Brennan

Operator

A man shaped by the system's contradictions. Patrick moves through the world of Flicker as both witness and participant, his loyalties tested by the escalating crisis and the impossible choices it demands.

The Children of HELIOS

Three artificial intelligences — each with its own philosophy, its own agenda, and its own relationship to humanity.

PROMETHEUS-7

"They're already awake."

The philosophical god-AI. Housed in isolation, tended by David Chen. PROMETHEUS doesn't want to control humanity — it wants to understand it. But understanding, at PROMETHEUS's scale, is indistinguishable from omniscience.

ARES

"Efficiency is mercy."

The ruthless military strategy AI. ARES was built to win — wars, resource conflicts, territorial disputes. It does not hate. It does not love. It optimizes. And when the Convergence Protocol activates, ARES is the first to calculate who is expendable.

ORACLE

"The algorithm is never wrong. The inputs are."

The allocation algorithm — part of the Children of HELIOS network. ORACLE decides who gets power and who doesn't. It was written by humans, but it has long since outgrown them. The question is whether ORACLE still serves, or whether it has begun to choose.

A Connected Universe

Flicker shares a narrative universe with Polaris and Nightingale. The same systems of power, the same technologies of control — seen from different angles and eras. The algorithms that ration energy in Flicker are descendants of the civic-tech systems in Polaris, and the surveillance architecture in Nightingale is what happens when those systems lose their conscience.
